Our club champion, Stewart Henderson, was recently rewarded for an excellent season of golf, by being selected to represent Scotland as part of the Senior European Championship team. To achieve his selection, Stewart finished third in the Scottish Senior Order of Merit, played over 10 events by July 2017. This in itself was a great achievement, as Stewart was ineligible to play in two of the qualifying events due to age restrictions.
The European Championship event was held at the PGA National Course, near Malmo in Sweden, from Tuesday 5th September to Saturday 9th September. There were teams from 20 European countries taking part in the championship, each with 6 players per team.
The first two days were played as 18 holes of stroke play, with the top eight teams qualifying for a match play knock-out format over the final 3 days. Scotland qualified as the top team from the two days of stroke play, with Stewart continuing his excellent form of this season, and recording rounds of one under par on day 1, and 2 over par on day 2. This placed Stewart in the top 15 of the 120 competitors over the stroke play.
Scotland progressed to the quarter-finals, where they faced Norway. The Scotland team won handsomely by 4 – 1, with Stewart winning his singles match by 2 holes.
Onto the semi-finals and Scotland faced Denmark. Unfortunately, the event was hit with the worst September rainfall experienced in Sweden – a “monsoon” was how Stewart described it. The Scotland team lost the match by 3 ½ – 1 ½. In Stewart’s match, he was 2 up after 8 holes, but 3 poor holes left him struggling, and in the conditions he eventually succumbed by 4 & 2.
So, Scotland were left to play in the Bronze medal match on the final day, playing against the “Auld Enemy”. Unfortunately, again the weather played a prominent part in proceedings. Stewart was playing in the last match on the course, and was standing on the 18th fairway one up on his opponent. However, the game in front went in favour of England and gave them an unassailable lead of 3 – 1. So, in the inclement weather, Stewart’s game was called into the clubhouse with his game declared as a half. However, quite rightly, Stewart is claiming a moral victory on the last day.
Stewart said ‘the trip was the most fantastic experience’, from the opening ceremony to the final day. His selection for the Scotland team was a great personal achievement, and capped what he described as ‘the best year I’ve ever had’.
Stewart commented that his game had improved this year as he had managed to sharpen up his short game. He credited this to the new chipping green available at Hamilton Golf Club, which he had used extensively over the year.
Stewart joined Hamilton Golf Club in 2004 and through his consistent and excellent play, has enjoyed success at local, county, national, and now International level. His achievements are noted below :
